ADD Neurological Support is a combination of brain enhancing nutrients providing support for memory, learning & behaviour. It contains essential fatty acids from tuna and evening primrose oil that are critical for brain & eye development & function.
What is ADD Neurological Support?
Neurological Support is a synergistic combination of brain enhancing nutrients, providing metabolic support for the memory, learning and behaviour.
It contains:
Tuna oil, which provides therapeutic levels of DHA
(docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)
Evening primrose oil, providing gamma linolenic acid
(GLA)
Phosphatidylserine and
Vitamin E
Why take ADD Neurological Support?
Research has shown that a number of essential fatty acids are critical for eye and brain development and function. Studies conducted by research scientists, Dr Jackie Stordy (University of Surrey) and Dr Maria Makrides (Flinders University) have demonstrated the importance of the combination of fatty acids in this product, for helping to maintain eye and brain function. Eye and brain function are important factors in our ability to learn to read, write and spell.
Why are these fatty acids important?
Essential fatty acids are vital components of every cell in the body and are extremely important for vision, hearing and brain function. A large proportion of the brain in humans is composed of the fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). We could not survive without these two nutrients, as they are constituents in many cells and are particularly abundant in brain and retina tissue, nerve relay stations (synapses), adrenal glands and sex glands.
They have many roles in the body with involvement in two main areas:
(1) Cardiovascular health and
(2) Brain and nervous system function
DHA is a major component of grey matter in the brain and plays a role in energy conversion and electron transfer necessary for the transmission of nerve signals across synapses. Highlighting the nutrient's importance in this regard, is the news that a deficiency of DHA has been revealed in studies of depressed and suicidal people.
While adequate intake of DHA is vital for everyone to maintain a healthy brain and nervous function, the developing foetus and growing baby relies more on DHA than anyone else. During the last trimester of pregnancy and the first six to twelve months of life, a baby's brain and retinal tissue goes through a period of intense growth, demanding large amounts of DHA.
DHA is a component of breast milk but it must first be consumed and manufactured in the mother's body. Insufficient infant DHA intake is associated with behavioural problems. Importantly, it is essential that the baby receives adequate DHA during this brain growth spurt, as the growth cannot be 'made up' later. Women with low plasma levels of DHA are also more likely to give birth pre-term.
Phosphatidylserine (PS for short) is a nutrient found most concentrated in brain cells - 70% of cell membranes are phosphatidylserine. Membranes are the cells' major work surfaces. Nerve cells especially depend on membranes to carry out their specialized functions. PS helps activate and regulate many of the proteins, which play key roles in these membrane processes. Cell membrane support from PS translates into support from the nerve cell as a whole, including generation of nerve impulses; accumulation, storage and release of nerve transmitters; and nerve transmitter action by way of "receptor" proteins located on the target cell surface. In turn, support from PS for individual nerve cells translates into support for the brain as a whole.
