What is 7-Keto DHEA?

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is known as the "fountain of youth" or "mother hormone" due to its role in the body of converting to other hormones - including oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisone and others. Levels of DHEA peak between the age of 25 and 30 in healthy individuals, then steadily decline as we age. Studies have linked energy, natural weight control, immunity to cancer and heart disease, memory retention and life extension to youthful levels of DHEA.

The scientific team headed by Dr Henry Lardy, Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Enzyme Research and Professor of Biological Studies at the University of Wisconsin, discovered more than 200 compounds. Of these, 7-Keto (3-acetyl-7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone) an analogue or metabolite of DHEA, was the most promising. Humanetics Corp. now holds 8 patents relating to 7-Keto, with several more pending.

Several safety and efficacy studies conducted on 7-Keto show it cannot be metabolised to the active hormones, such as oestrogen and testosterone or raise blood levels of DHEA. This avoids the unwanted risks and side effects that have been associated with DHEA supplementation, while retaining and enhancing the immunologic, memory enhancing and thermogenic effects.

A recent, well-designed, random double-blind and placebo controlled study for body composition, using 7-Keto, revealed significant weight loss and body fat loss in overweight subjects over 8 weeks, with no detrimental side effects. The results of the study indicate that 7-Keto, combined with one hour of cross-training 3 times per week, safely and effectively yields significant fat and weight loss, without any significant changes in diet, overall caloric intake or body water percentages.

The fact that 7-Keto significantly elevated T3 (a thyroid hormone that effects metabolism) within normal clinical ranges, indicates that it may safely affect basal metabolism. Importantly, there was no significant change in tests on either thyroid hormone TSH and T4, indicating no negative impact on thyroid function, within the time frame of the study.

The thyroid is the key internal regulator of metabolism. As we age, the activity of the thyroid naturally declines, which has a negative effect on our metabolic rate. This inhibits the body's ability to utilise ingested calories for energy and as a consequence, many of these calories, which would have been burned off in our youth, are now stored in fat.

Of the thyroid hormones, T3 is the most active and can have the greatest influence on metabolic rate. 7-Keto's ability to naturally increase T3 activity as we age, can have a profoundly positive influence on how efficiently we metabolise our calories and avoid excessive weight gain.

7-Keto also fares well in comparison studies to a number of prescription weight loss drugs. A daily supplementation of 200mg of 7-Keto resulted in an average weight loss of 0.36kg per week, falling in the middle range, compared to a high of 0.63kg per week to a low of 0.19kg per week.
On the safety front, 7-Keto comes out on top, as there were no adverse side effects reported throughout the study.
