The Sambucol range of products contains an extract from Elderberries. The Elder Flowers and ripe Elder Berries have long been used as a pleasant article of food, making home-made drinks and preserves, wine and pies, chutney and ketchup. The wine which improves with age, and taken hot with sugar, just before going to bed and is an old fashioned and well established cure for a cold.

The ripen berries pose valuable medicinal properties. It is known as one of the best preventives against the advance of influenza and the ill effects of a chill.

Sambucol was developed in 1991 by Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, a world-renowned virologist. The Sambucol line of products is the result of two decades of Dr. Mumcuoglu's extensive research in the fields of virology and immunology.

Sambucol, a standardized extract, is a preparation based on the berries of the Black Elder, used as herbal remedy against influenza virus infections. It contains a potent antiviral compound, AntiVirin® as well as a high amount of three flavonoids (Bronnum-Hansen and Hansen, 1983). The flavonoids are naturally occurring plant antioxidants. Sambucol products are based on a standardized, Black Elderberry extract. The products are 100% natural, and accordingly are suitable for all members of the family.

The unique formula contains AntiVirin®, a potent anti-viral compound, as well as flavonoids - naturally occurring plant anti oxidants. The unique Elderberry extract has numerous anti-viral therapeutic properties. Clinical studies have proven Sambucol to be effective in fighting a number of influenza virus strains.

Sambucol can both prevent and reduce the severity of of the Influenza virus.

Laboratory tests: Sambucol® a standardized Black Elderberry extract containing a defined amount of AntiVirin®, the key active ingredient, was shown to reduce hemagglutination and inhibit replication of human influenza virus type A, type B and animal strains from swine and turkeys in cell cultures.

Clinical Study: A double-blind placebo-controlled clinical study was conducted during an outbreak of influenza B Panama. A significant improvement of the symptoms, including fever, was seen in 93.3% of the cases in the Sambucol treated group within 2 days. A complete cure was achieved within 2 to 3 days in nearly 90% of the Sambucol treated group compared to at least 6 days in the placebo group.

Sambucol was tested in cell cultures against four strains of HSV-1 (Herpes) including two acyclovir-resistant strains. The replication of the virus was completely inhibited in the presence of Sambucol. More studies are currently being done. Human T Cell Leukemia Sambucol® was given on a daily basis to 6 HAM/TSP patients for one month. In 3 out of 6 patients tested, the titer of HTLV-1 antibodies was found to decrease by 50%.
